PHILADELPHIA — A Phase 3 clinical trial of a new mental-health treatment, called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), has begun in a trial site in the Philadelphia area, officials said.
The Phase 3 trial is the first of its kind in the U.S. and will enroll 30 people with bipolar disorder and chronic anxiety and depression who have been in treatment for at least a year, said Dr. Scott McDaniel, a psychiatrist who runs the clinical trial site.
“It’s a huge step forward,” McDaniel said in a telephone interview Monday.
There are no other studies that compare MBSR with other therapies, he added.
The trial has been in the works for months.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced last week that it will begin screening the new treatment for a possible link to schizophrenia.
The new study, called the Mindfulness Study, began last week in a clinical trial center at University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Study of Stress and the Brain.
More than 70 percent of participants have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or anxiety, and at least half of them have anxiety disorders.
The study will look at how people respond to cognitive behavioral therapy, a cognitive behavioral treatment that is designed to reduce anxiety and stress.
It will be a trial that will last several years, said McDaniel.
MBSRC is the brainwave meditation tool that was developed by mindfulness-based-health pioneer and former Harvard Medical School professor Daniel Goleman.
It’s based on the idea that when we focus on something positive, we can be more mindful of the things that are troubling us.
It can help reduce stress, anger and worry, and it helps us live a better life.
For those who have mental illness, MBSRC was the first and only type of mental health treatment they were told they could get without going through a psychiatrist, said the study’s co-author, Dr. Joseph F. Cacioppo, a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University.
That meant the new MBSr treatment could work even for those with no history of mental illness.
Focused meditation is a form of mindfulness meditation that focuses on breathing, focusing on breathing and focusing on your breathing, said Cacioppo.
You breathe in, out and out, with a clear goal.
We found that people who were using MBSre were better at reducing their stress, anxiety and worry.
But we also found that there was a benefit for people with mental illness who were on MBSrelaxed.
People who were in a supportive environment who were doing MBSres were also better at this task than those who were not in supportive settings, he said.
The study is designed as a trial of the treatment in a community of people with depression and bipolar disorder.
The new Mbsr treatment is designed for people who have a lot of negative thoughts, including thoughts of suicide, violence and suicidal thoughts.
Those with these thoughts should be screened for depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions, McDaniel noted.
The MBSrh study is part of a larger trial, the MBS Research Study, which is being conducted in the same area.
Cacioppo is part.
In the meantime, Mbsrs are being offered as an adjunct treatment for the people with mood disorders, like bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD, depression and PTSD-related anxiety disorders, McDaniels study co-lead Dr. Mark E. Zaleski said in an email.
The aim is to find out if MBSrs help people with these disorders to control their emotions and improve their lives.”MBSrs offer a way to control negative emotions,” Zalesi said.
“I believe that this is a treatment that may provide a solution for the many people who do not have treatment options, such as those with chronic anxiety, bipolar disorder that are not on other therapies.”
The Phase 2 trial of MBS was in a clinic in Pittsburgh, which had to close, said John P. Smith, the clinic’s executive director.
Smith said that MBSers will not be offered in a general population setting in the Pittsburgh area.
MBSRs can be used for individuals with chronic or severe mental illness or those with major life-threatening conditions, like cancer or stroke.
According to the CDC, MTSR can help treat depression, panic disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder, as well as anxiety and panic disorders.
It is a mood-stabilizing drug.
A new MTSr treatment, the Mindful Group Mindfulness Training, has been developed by the Mindfully Foundation.
Mindful is an online group for people and groups with bipolar or anxiety disorders to talk about mindfulness, meditation and other approaches to reducing stress and anxiety, the nonprofit Mindful Foundation said in its statement.MBSr has also been given the thumbs up by the American Academy of Psychiatry and
